Alief is the most d iverse area of Houston and has a high concentration
of youth who lack appropriate activities and social outlets. Gangs,
vandalism and drop out rates are all rising. To improve the community,
Texans Together, along with the City and the apartment owners, has
established an on-site resource center in a modest income,
thousand-person apartment complex. Texans Together is helping
residents to obtain needed services, such as after-school programs and
CHIP enrollment. Texans Together also is engaging residents to work
together to reduce crime and advocate for improvements in youth
services and schools. Donate to this project!

The Mint Summer Camp
Summer is an especially difficult time for families
who canno t afford summer camp and often have to leave their children
unsupervised at home. Studies also
suggest that students from low-income families have serious academic setbacks
over the summer months and gains made during the school are easily lost without
constructive stimulation.
Iris Alicea, retired City of Houston employee and volunteer with Texans Together, developed a camp that will help youth become
better citizens, stay occupied and off the streets, and obtain the skills that
will make them better students.
Check out our Flickr page and our YouTube page for more pictures and video of the children at the Mint's first summer camp.
